Generic guiding principles for those supporting learning in the workplace
July 4 This publication from NHS Education for Scotland (NES) aims to support a learning culture by providing these generic guiding principles for individuals and groups supporting learning in the workplace. The guidance was developed by representatives from professions and staff groups across NES and was based on experience combined with evidence and learning resources already in existence. Information is included on the rationale and drivers for the guidance. The guiding principles are appropriate to all healthcare professions and care was taken to ensure that they link with the relevant NHS Knowledge and Skills core and specific domains. There are six guiding principles each of which has supporting statements to assist with interpretation and contextualisation and examples of useful resources, and it is emphasised that the principles need to be interpreted by individuals and organisations in their own context. An example case study illustrates the implementation of the principles. NES published this guidance in December 2008.

RCN competences : an integrated career and competence framework for nurses working with HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy in adults
July 3 This career and competence framework published by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in June 2009 aims to provide a framework for nurses working in HIV-related medical aesthetics and can be used as a template to guide clinical practice. It supplements a framework developed by the RCN for nurses in aesthetic medicine in 2005. Facial lipoatrophy, which can result from the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for the treatment of HIV, can be defined as fat loss from the face. Disfigurement and anxiety caused by this may also impact on patients? compliance with HIV medication. HIV-related medical aesthetics in this document refers to a set of non-surgical clinical procedures which can restore a more natural appearance, and the framework consists of four specialist competences around the care of the person receiving fully biodegradable dermal augmentation for correction of HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy. The competences cover assessment, care, health promotion and maintaining safety. The framework can be used in different ways for example as a source for specialist training, a benchmarking tool, for self-assessment and professional development. It is intended that the framework be reviewed in November 2009.

Role of the nurse
July 2 This discussion paper, published by NHS Employers in June 2009, is intended to give employers a summary of the emerging issues around current nursing workforce developments. These include developments from the NHS Next Stage Review, the Modernising Nursing Careers initiative, the Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery and the work being done by the Nursing and Midwifery Council on pre-registration education which, along with other initiatives, are all acting as policy drivers for change. Within this context the document sets out seven areas for discussion and within each of these suggests key questions for employers. The discussion paper is part of NHS Employer?s ongoing programme of work relating to nursing workforce issues which is also outlined in the document.
