You could maybe get a job as a HCA but you may have to work there for a year or more bdfore they put you on the course, they may also want you to do level 2 NVQ before you do level 3 if you have had no HCA experience. With funding the way it is in the NHS this could be a long haul to gain an NVQ 3 needed to get onto a nursing course. Your best bet is an OU course introduction to health and social care 60 point course or an access to nursing. Just wanted to say abig thank you to all that replied to my post i have contacted my local uni so i am just waiting on the info to arrive :-) Does anyone know is there a way of becoming an auxillary nurse and then working thro NVQ's to gain the requirements? Im just trying to think of every option as im not going to give up?

Hi Guys, i'm new to all of this but looks like its something i'll be using alot from now on!

Just wondering if anyone could help me, i'm planning my elective placement of 6 weeks in new zealand for feb 09, very exciting!!! i have managed to secure a placement at an elderly unit and have be insured by the rcn. Im just organaising my visa im unsure what type of visa i would require? and thought someone maybe able to give me some info before i have to resort to phoning the embassy at £1 an hour not how i planned to spend my bursary ha ha. Also any other info about electives overseas would be greatly appreciated.

Midwifery is now degree only, so you will be able to apply for a bursery but it will be means tested in England and there is no garauntee that you will get £6000 as stated above this amount is for a Dip He and is therefore NOT means tested.The best thing to do is go on the Student grant website and use the calculator, if a single parent you may be able to claim for kids etc but it will be dependant on YOUR circumstances.

I just tapped into calculator and single parent with one child in England it comes up at about £9000 you will get child tax credit on top and if like you say you are a single parent you will have full discount on council tax. for the BSC you will also be able to get a student loan. You may also be able to work on the bank where you work now to do some shifts, you do get quite a bit of free time as a student as long as your studies do not suffer, but hey a girls gotta live

Hi dont think you get help with rent, but you will get 25% discount on council tax. Students in England can also apply for a student loan.
