Wide Range of Information for Theatre Nurses based in the UK

Theatre Nursing is a specialist nursing role where a great deal of expertise and skills have to be applied on a day to day basis.

The Theatre role involves a wide range of disciplines including::
  • Ensure preoperative checks and prior to the administration of any anaesthetic or surgical procedure.
  • Psychological Preparation using appropriate communication.
  • Physically monitoring the patient using electronic devices.
  • Process Management ensuring safeguards against wrong wrong operations
  • Pre-Operation checking including of swabs, instruments, needles etc,
  • Report discrepancies to the Anaesthetist / Surgeon / Theatre Manager or Senior Member of Theatre Staff on Duty.
  • Respond to incidents relating to the intervention/treatment with an appropriate degree of urgency.
  • To ensure that correct aseptic techniques are used at all times.
  • To administer medicines in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council guidelines, Policies and Procedures.
  • To deliver high quality patient care which is clinically effective, evidence based and appropriate.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care.
  • Organise and prioritise own workload to ensure provision of a quality service.
  • Keep accurate and complete records consistent with regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate an organised, effective and timely approach to all tasks.
  • Correctly follow routine maintenance schedules and procedures for equipment.
